Tour Overview

For US-based travellers with a fixed return date, we recommend the helicopter route over a road yatra. Our own road package from Delhi takes 11 days. The Char Dham Yatra by helicopter from the USA, as we run it, takes 6 days and 5 nights, starting and ending in Dehradun and covering Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath.

This page is for NRIs, OCI cardholders and US citizens. It sets out the price, the day-by-day route, the paperwork India asks of US passport holders, and what can go wrong with mountain weather.

Quick facts

  • Duration: 6 days / 5 nights, Dehradun to Dehradun
  • Price: ₹2,20,000 per person + 5% GST (our published rate, September 2026)
  • How you get there: USA → Delhi → Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun
  • Documents: US passport with an e-Visa, or US passport with an OCI card; e-Arrival card; free Char Dham registration
  • Luggage on the helicopter: 5 kg per person
  • Weather: every flight depends on conditions on the day, so keep one spare day

Who the Helicopter Yatra Suits

It suits anyone who can’t spare 11 days in the mountains. It also works well when parents fly in from another Indian city and the family meets in Dehradun on Day 1. If someone in your group can’t manage the 16 km trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath, the helicopter removes that walk entirely.

It doesn’t remove the altitude. Official figures from Uttarakhand Tourism’s registration portal:

Dham Altitude
Yamunotri 3,293 m (about 10,800 ft)
Gangotri 3,100 m (about 10,170 ft)
Kedarnath 3,580 m (about 11,750 ft)
Badrinath 3,133 m (about 10,280 ft)

By helicopter you reach these heights within an hour of take-off, with no days on the road to adjust. See a doctor before booking if anyone has a heart, lung or blood-pressure condition, and read the state’s health advisory on the registration portal.

Age matters too. The portal’s FAQ says people aged 10 to 65 can register for the Char Dham Yatra. If anyone in your group falls outside that range, call the state helpline before you pay for anything, ours included.

Char Dham Yatra by Helicopter from USA: Packages and Cost

These are our published per-person prices for September 2026.

Char Dham by road from Delhi 11 days / 10 nights Delhi from ₹43,900 + GST

In dollars, the Char Dham package came to about US$2,410 including GST at ₹95.9 per dollar, the rate on 30 September 2026 (exchange-rates.org). Your card or bank sets the actual rate on the day you pay. International flights, the Delhi to Dehradun flight and travel insurance are not in any package.

Helicopter Package vs Kedarnath Shuttle Seat

NRIs often confuse the two. Official numbers show how different they are. In the first phase of the 2026 season, from April to 26 June, the Ministry of Civil Aviation counted 12,032 shuttle departures carrying 67,064 pilgrims, and 2,065 charter operations carrying 11,715 (PIB).

A shuttle seat is one short flight to Kedarnath from the Guptkashi, Phata or Sersi helipads. The state registration portal says these seats can be booked only through IRCTC HeliYatra. If someone on WhatsApp offers you one, don’t pay.

Our package is different. Every flight sector in the itinerary, the Kedarnath leg included, is part of the package price, so you don’t book a shuttle seat yourself.

6-day Char Dham helicopter itinerary from Dehradun

6 Badrinath → Dehradun Morning darshan after breakfast, flight back to Sahastradhara Helipad Onward travel

Darshan at all four Dhams is arranged as VIP darshan, subject to temple committee rules on the day.

Yamunotri needs a walk. The helicopter lands at Kharsali, and from Janki Chatti, the last point vehicles can reach, Uttarakhand Tourism puts the trek to the temple at 6 km. Ponies and palkis are available. Tell us at booking if anyone in your group will need one.

Getting from the USA to Dehradun

Every flight in this circuit starts at Sahastradhara Helipad in Dehradun. From America the route is USA → Delhi → Dehradun.

  1. Fly from your US city to Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi (DEL).
  2. Take a domestic flight to Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (DED). The scheduled flight is about an hour.
  3. Our team meets you at Jolly Grant and handles hotel and helipad transfers from there.

For 2026 travel: until 1 November, while US daylight saving is on, India is 9.5 hours ahead of Eastern time and 12.5 hours ahead of Pacific time. From 1 November the gap is 10.5 and 13.5 hours. Many flights from the US land in Delhi late at night. Take a full rest day before Day 2, because the helipad reporting time is 6 AM.

Documents and Rules for US Travellers

You are What to carry
US citizen without OCI US passport and an Indian visa. India’s official e-Visa portal lists US nationals as eligible for the e-Tourist Visa. Apply at least 4 days and no more than 120 days before arrival
OCI cardholder US passport and OCI card
Indian passport holder (NRI) Valid Indian passport

The same government portal says foreign nationals and OCI cardholders must fill in the e-Arrival card online within 72 hours before arrival. It is a short form, not a visa.

Char Dham Registration for NRIs and Foreign Nationals

Uttarakhand Tourism says every pilgrim must register before the yatra, and that registration is free. A passport is an accepted ID. After registering you get a QR-coded registration letter, which is checked at counters at the entry to all four Dhams. Register on the official portal with the same passport you’ll carry.

State helplines, as listed on the portal:

  • 1364 toll-free inside Uttarakhand
  • +91 135 1364 from outside Uttarakhand (from the US, dial 011 91 135 1364)
  • tourist assistance on 0135-3520100, 7 AM to 9 PM India time

For the standard circuit, this registration is the pilgrimage paperwork you need. Side trips off the route can need separate permits for foreign nationals, so ask us before planning one.

What We Ask for at Booking

We need a passport copy for every foreign national and the body weight of every passenger. Weights go into load planning for each flight, and the pilot has the final say on loading. For 2026, the Ministry of Civil Aviation capped passenger loads on Char Dham helicopters at 70% of capacity. There is very little room for extra kilos. Our luggage allowance is 5 kg per person, and excess weight is charged.

Travel insurance is your responsibility. Before you buy, check in writing that the policy covers helicopter flights and altitudes above 3,000 m.

Best Time to Go and 2026 Temple Dates

Dham 2026 opening 2026 closing
Yamunotri 19 April Not yet announced
Gangotri 19 April Not yet announced
Kedarnath 22 April Not yet announced
Badrinath 23 April Not yet announced

Opening dates and closing status as shown on Uttarakhand Tourism’s registration portal on 30 September 2026. The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee confirms the Kedarnath and Badrinath dates. The shrines traditionally close around Diwali and Bhai Dooj. Don’t book a November trip until the closing dates are announced.

Our recommendation for US travellers is mid-September to October. The monsoon is over by then and the crowds are thinner than in May and June. May and June work too, but seats go early, so book two to three months ahead.

Avoid July and August. In 2026, helicopter services in the Kedarnath valley were stopped for the monsoon and were due to restart on 15 September, according to the Rudraprayag District Magistrate (ANI).

What Happens in Bad Weather

Char Dham helicopters fly only in daylight and in safe visibility, and the pilot decides on the day. When weather stops a flight, that sector is rescheduled once it is safe to fly. This is why we ask every US traveller to keep one spare day before the international flight home. Read our helicopter safety guidelines before you travel.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Booking international flights before the helicopter dates are confirmed.
  • Flying home from Delhi on the evening of Day 6. One weather delay and you miss it.
  • Packing for a normal holiday. On the helicopter you get 5 kg, so leave the big suitcase in Delhi or at the Dehradun hotel.
  • Skipping registration. The QR letter is checked at every Dham.
  • Paying anyone for registration, which is free, or for a Kedarnath shuttle seat outside IRCTC HeliYatra.
  • Treating Kedarnath like sea level. Walk slowly, drink water and skip alcohol. Intoxicants aren’t allowed on our flights anyway.

Pack thermals, a warm jacket, gloves and a cap, even in May. Carry printed copies of your passport, visa or OCI card, and registration letter. Get an Indian SIM or eSIM when you land. Keep some rupees in cash too, since card payments aren’t accepted everywhere.
